Education

Sydney schools are much the same as those located throughout Australia. You will have a number of private and public schools with different religious denominations. Settling your children in to a new school is always a difficult task, however the NSW Board of Studies will assist with all ages of schooling. To search for all schools located in NSW go to the NSW Board of Studies website.

Another excellent website is the NSW Department of Education where you'll find helpful checklists for children starting all ages of schooling. They will also provide information on how you can help your child with studying by showing you the curriculum for different subjects. You may also contact them at NSW Department of Education Ph (02) 9561- 8000 or Board of Studies NSW Ph (02) 9367-8111.

For information about Catholic schooling in the Sydney area visit the Sydney Catholic Education Office website. Includes a searchable directory with contact information for all Catholic schools in the area.

ALLdownunder.com is a great website for a wide variety of Australian information including Universities in Australia and links to their websites, school term dates and links to state education websites. Learn about Australia with facts and figures, literature, Aussie slang, recipes, as well as measurement and food conversions and more.

A good resource for teachers and students moving to Australia is the Australian Studies Network. You'll find lots of links (with good descriptions) to a variety of topics related to Australia.

Ground Transportation

Sydney public transport is a great way to travel to and from work or on weekend outings. The Olympics have improved all transport services in Sydney. For route time tables and ticket price information on Sydney buses, ferries, and trains, call the State Transit Info line at Ph 13-1500 daily from 6am - 10pm.

Travellers who plan to make extensive use of the city’s public transport system should buy the “Sydney Bus, Rail, Ferry Guide,” available at most newsstands and the NSW Travel Centre. For regular public transport users, they offer travel passes that have concessions depending on the amount of usage.

Taxis can be hailed on the street, hired from a taxi stand, or booked by phone. A booking by phone usually incurs additional charges. On the south side of the Harbour contact Sydney Taxis at Ph. 13-1008. North of the bridge, try ABC Taxis at Ph. 13-2522. Taxis should only be used for short distances as they are not the most economical method of transport.

Real Estate

In 1991, for the first time in a century, people began to move back into Central Sydney to live. This trend was facilitated by the City of Sydney Council which, from 1991, introduced planning policies to encourage residential development in the city. Since then Sydney has been a mass of new developments within the inner city & it’s outskirts. Property in Sydney is by far the most expensive in comparison to it’s neighbouring states. With the diverse urban sprawl it is most difficult to offer estimated costs of each region. You'll find more information in our real estate guide.
